Last time I mentioned that I had the privilege to record a Steamscapes actual play with the One Shot Podcast. The second and third episodes of that are now available, so it's time for a couple more character studies! I should note that there are some definite spoilers involved in the character descriptions here, so you may want to wait until after you've listened to all the episodes before you read the details below.
First of all, we have everyone's favorite loud-mouth automaton, Taro Ichi, played by Drew Mierzejewski. Drew wanted a sort of steampunk version of the classic mythical hero Momotaro. I offered him a chance to play an automaton gunslinger, which seemed to fit fairly well. Here's his story:
You were designed to be a gunfighter, and you're pretty good at it. However, you were abandoned as a prototype for the Emperor's automaton divisions because 1) you're not terribly strong and can't carry a lot of gear and 2) you were designed to be smart enough to report on the status of battles, but it turns out you wouldn't shut up. You tend to speak honestly and frankly with no regard for appropriateness, and many people do not seem to appreciate that. In trying to discover your own way in life, you have tried to focus on creating rather than destroying. Unfortunately, what you seem to be good at creating are guns.
You recently hired yourself out as a bodyguard to a young noblewoman whose ship stopped in Okinawa. Perhaps by seeing more of the world you will be able to figure out what else you might do with your life.
Kind of like that, but with guns.
And Taro's stats:
Taro Ichi (or simply Taro)

Skills: Climbing d4, Fighting d6, Gunsmithing d8, Healing d6, Notice d6, Shooting d10, Survival d6, Throwing d4, Tracking d6
Charisma: -2/-4; Pace: 6; Parry: 5; Toughness: 7 (2)

And rounding out our party is Koga Miyako, played by Alyson Grauer. I made this character the conceptual center of the adventure, so she has lots of secrets. Most importantly, she is a kunoichi (in the traditional, information-gathering sense) for the Koga family.
The Meiji Emperor's armies are focused on the invasion of Manchuria right now, but the breakaway Republic of Ezo (in Hokkaido) remains a nagging problem. So far, the rebels have been kept fairly isolated, but if they were to seek an alliance with Japan's current enemies - China and Russia - they could open up a second front much closer to home. The well-placed Koga family has uncovered information that suggests the Republic has developed some kind of revenue stream that moves through Singapore. Someone needs to go there and quietly find out more. That someone is you. This is your first long-term assignment for the family, and you do not want to mess it up.
While you are traveling, you definitely want to avoid calling attention to your family name. It's not too unusual to be seeing the world as a wealthy noble, but you don't want to throw around the "Koga" name while you're in Singapore. Also, because it would look a little strange for a teenage girl to be traveling alone, you hired Taro in Okinawa to be your bodyguard.
I picture a slightly younger Kanzaki Sumire.
And her stats:
Attributes: Agility d8, Smarts d8, Spirit d8, Strength d4, Vigor d4
Skills: Climbing d4, Fighting d4, Investigation d8, Knowledge (Disguise) d6, Lockpicking d6, Notice d8, Stealth d8, Streetwise d4, Swimming d4
Charisma: 2; Pace: 8; Parry: 4; Toughness: 3
Hindrances: Cautious, Enemy (Minor), Small
Edges: Dodge, Elan, Extraction, Fleet-Footed, Linguist, Noble (includes Rich)
I hope you enjoyed the episodes as much as I did! And please keep listening to all the shows on the One Shot network. They do excellent work!
